Green Product Certification

A green product is a sustainable product designed to minimize its environmental impacts during its whole life-cycle and even after it's of no use. Green products are usually identified by having two basic goals – reducing waste and maximizing resource efficiency. They are manufactured using toxic-free ingredients and environmentally-friendly procedures and achieve certifications such as GreenPro, Environmental Product Decleration (EPD), Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), etc.

The green movement has led to a paradigm shift in the built environment industry. Green product certification is an important piece in the transformation of the built environment eco system. Besides eco-friendly approach to the environment, the use of green products in construction sector is increasing  over the years due to rise in concerns about indoor health and wellbeing due to carcinogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs).  In green building projects, Green Products are given prominence  in form of achievement points to encourage all stakeholders to choose green products.

Advantages of Green Products Certification for Product Manufactures

    Environmental Product Declaration

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent  and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products. As a voluntary declaration of the life-cycle environmental impact, having an EPD imply that the declared product is environmentally Conscious than their alternatives.

An EPD provides relevant and verified information to meet the various communication needs. This may be relevant within the supply-chain and for end-products both in the private and public sector, as well as for more general purposes in information activities and marketing.

EPD is recognized widely across the globe and are predominately recommended in USGBC LEED rating systems.

      Life Cycle Analysis

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a quantitative and objective method to evaluate environmental impact (consumption of material, energy resources, emissions, recycling and waste) of any product or building, through all phases of a product life  including resource extraction, production, use, recycle and waste disposal.

LCA provides a comprehensive view of the environmental aspects of the product/ building and its processes and presents an accurate picture of the true environmental trade-offs in product and process selection.
