The Government of India is finalising a mandate for public procurement of up to 25% sustainable, green steel, a transformative move for the sector and a critical milestone for our national net-zero goals. This landmark move (as reported by Business Standard) aims to slash CO2 emissions from one of India’s most carbon-intensive sectors.
With steel production contributing ~12% of India’s emissions, this initiative paves the way for meaningful market creation, cleaner supply chains, and a robust signal to manufacturers: Sustainability is not optional anymore, it’s the future.
As highlighted in public procurement can catalyze decarbonization, particularly across key sectors like housing, railways, and highways. This is our moment to shift from intent to measurable action.
Indian steel manufacturers:
To truly leverage this policy, differentiate in both domestic and global markets, and future-proof business against international trade barriers (like the EU’s CBAM), it’s time to act:
·Obtain Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that demonstrate the transparency and environmental impact of your steel.
·Measure and disclose Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) for all steel grades.
