Retrofitting of an existing glazed commercial building with movable shades in Delhi resulted in 50% energy reduction in the HVAC system.
Movable (or dynamic) external shades work by using an automated system to constantly adjust their position in real-time, responding to changing environmental conditions such as the sun’s angle and intensity, outdoor temperature, and indoor light levels. This contrasts with fixed shading that offers optimal performance for only a specific time of day or year.
How it operates?
Input: Sensors detect that direct, intense sunlight is hitting a specific facade of the building.
The controller: determines the optimal position for the shades based on the data,
Output: Actuator receives a signal to adjust the blinds rotating the slats to a 60-degree angle to block direct sun but still allow diffuse light, and fully closing the shades during peak heat hours.
Continuous: System continuously monitors the conditions and adjusts the shades throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky and weather conditions change, ensuring optimal performance at all times
