From Factory Floor to Boardroom Tenders: How a Karnataka manufacturer is turning recycled waste into a market-access weapon.
Sustainability is increasingly becoming a market-access strategy for furniture manufacturers, not just a compliance exercise.
We are working with a furniture manufacturing company based in Karnataka for their ongoing journey towards Type I Product Ecolabels for both wood and non-wood furniture portfolios.
The initiative is helping them translate existing operational improvements into credible, 3rd party verified product sustainability credentials, enabling evidence-based communication and reducing the risk of unsubstantiated environmental claims or greenwashing.
Key focus areas include responsible material sourcing, recycled content, energy efficiency, waste management, product performance, green supply-chain practices, product stewardship and life-cycle thinking.
Some encouraging findings from the assessment include:
• 30 to 40% recycled content across their furniture product range
• >25% reduction in specific energy consumption
• >75% of generated waste identified as recyclable
For furniture manufacturers, Type I Product Ecolabels & certifications such as GreenPro, GRIHA can strengthen credibility with architects, developers, green building projects and institutional procurement teams. They also help convert sustainability initiatives into a stronger product value proposition, supporting differentiation in a competitive commercial furniture market.
The next phase of this journey is expected to focus on developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for selected high-volume furniture products, enabling transparent, quantified environmental disclosure and support specification in commercial projects pursuing green building frameworks such as LEED.
A meaningful sustainability roadmap can therefore support both operational improvements and growth: from resource efficiency and circularity within the factory to stronger market access, product specification and customer confidence.
