A data centre can be highly energy-efficient… and still consume a significant amount of water.
We often talk about PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) when discussing data centre efficiency.
But what about WUE: Water Usage Effectiveness?
WUE tells us how much water is consumed to support every kWh of IT energy.
WUE = Annual Site Water Usage (Litres) ÷ IT Equipment Energy (kWh)
And here’s where it gets interesting…
· As computing power increases, cooling demand increases.
· Cooling systems can require significant quantities of water.
· And in a water-stressed region, 1 litre of water doesn’t have the same sustainability impact as 1 litre somewhere else.
So, should we really be asking only:
“How energy efficient is this data centre?”
Maybe we should also ask:
·“How water efficient is it?”
·“What source of water are we using?”
·“Are we using potable water unnecessarily?”
·“Can rainwater or recycled water be utilised?”
·“Can cooling strategies reduce water dependency?”
The future of sustainable data centres isn’t about choosing between energy efficiency and water efficiency.
It’s about finding the right balance between Energy + Water + Carbon + Resilience.
A good WUE target should not be a number picked from a benchmark.
It should be a project-specific target, shaped by:
🌡️ Climate
💧 Water stress
⚙️ Cooling technology
🔄 Water reuse & recovery
🖥️ IT utilisation
📊 Operational performance
Because ultimately, the question isn’t:
“What is the lowest WUE we can achieve?”
It is:
“What is the most sustainable way to deliver the required computing performance with the least impact on our critical resources?”
That is where WUE moves from being just a KPI to becoming a design strategy.
