Year of the Fire Horse: Why 2026 is the Indeniable Year of EPD for Indian Manufacturers

Chinese New Year 2026 ushers in the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of unstoppable energy, passion, and rapid movement. And in India, that fire is about to ignite the construction industry, making 2026 the undeniable Year of EPDs.

What is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a third-party verified document that transparently reports a product’s environmental impacts based on Life Cycle Assessment. EPDs are Standardized, Quantified, Comparable, independently verified, and convert sustainability claims into measurable data.

For most Indian manufacturers today, EPDs are no longer viewed as optional sustainability documents but are increasingly recognized as a strategic business tool that strengthens the use case for sustainability and provides a competitive edge in the market.

Why the Demand for EPDs is Accelerating Now

1️. Embodied Carbon Is Now a Procurement Metric

Green building frameworks are no longer focused only on operational efficiency. Embodied carbon, the emissions locked into building materials is now central and mandatory for many disclosures and green building rating systems from this year. Developers increasingly prefer suppliers who can provide verified environmental data for using it for their projects’ carbon footprint, building rating requirements and EPDs provide that data.

2️. Export Markets Are Tightening

Indian exporters in sectors such as:

Cement, Steel, Aluminum, Fertilizers, etc are entering a new era of carbon scrutiny. Embedded emissions are no longer abstract sustainability indicators. They are compliance and competitiveness parameters. EPDs provide structured, credible documentation to support product-level transparency.

3️. Procurement Is Moving Beyond ESG Storytelling

Corporate ESG reporting was Phase 1 and it is already happening in India. Phase 2 is product-level transparency. Buyers now ask, What is the carbon intensity of this product? Can it be verified data? How does it compare to alternatives? An EPD answers all these questions and provides a business case for the manufacturers.

4️. EPD Development Is Becoming More Scalable

Historically, companies hesitated due to perceived complexity for an LCA. Product category-specific as well as sector agnostic Standardized Product Category Rules (PCR) and streamlined verification processes are making EPD development more practical for manufacturers for all sizes. The whole EPD ecosystem is now facilitating scaling of EPDs in India with multiple program operators, verifiers, regional support teams & LCA experts to support the process.

What This Means for Indian Manufacturers in 2026

From 2026, suppliers with verified product-level environmental data and EPDs gain:

✔ Preferred supplier positioning

✔ Stronger negotiation leverage

✔ Access to green procurement programs

✔ Internal insights into emission hotspots & product performance

✔ Credible sustainability communication

The companies that move early will shape buyer conversations. EPDs are not about marketing. They are about competitiveness in a carbon-conscious global economy.
