In the face of growing urban water scarcity, the concept of Net Zero Water has moved from a lofty ideal to an essential standard for sustainable development. We at Conserve Consultants are happy to have engineered the water sustainability strategy for Navins Antheia Poetry in Bangalore, a residential project that has now achieved the esteemed IGBC NetZero Water Certification.
Conserve Consultants is proud to announce that our Navins Antheia Poetry residential development in Karnataka is the first project in Bangalore to achieve the IGBC Net Zero Water Certification in Design, and the third residential project in South India to have achieved this status. Even more significantly, Conserve Consultants has been instrumental in shaping two out of the three Net Zero Water–certified residential projects in South India Radiance Regalia in Tamil Nadu and Navins Antheia Poetry in Karnataka.
This certification isn’t just about saving water; it’s about creating a self-sufficient, water-positive ecosystem. Here’s how we did it.
What Is IGBC NetZero Water?
Net Zero Water projects ensure that total water withdrawn from municipal or ground water sources is balanced by the total water returned through on-site treatment and recharge. Two critical metrics define success:
- Water Performance Ratio (WPR): Percent of demand met by alternate sources.
- Water Back to Source (WBS): Ratio of water returned to sources versus water withdrawn.
The Project Vision: Beyond Compliance
The goal was clear: To achieve national excellence in water management. The project, comprising 42 dwelling units, aimed to enhance occupant well-being while significantly minimizing its environmental footprint. Our integrated strategy focused on the two IGBC metrics: WPR and WBS.
1. Maximizing Alternate Water Sources (WPR: 0.64)
The key factor to reduce freshwater dependency is maximizing the use of alternative water. The design ensures that 67% of the total water demand is met through the treated wastewater and harvested rainwater.
- Sewage Treatment Plant (STP): A 15 KLD STP using MBBR/FBR technology treats 100% of the project's wastewater to strict CPCB standards (BOD ≤ 10 mg/L). This treated water reused for flushing, landscaping, irrigation, and car washing.
- Multi-Application Reuse: With reuse integrated into daily utilities, the project models an efficient water loop for urban developments.
2. Becoming Water Positive (WBS: 1.17)
A Net Zero Water project must give back. The systems at Navins Antheia Poetry not only conserve but also replenish.
- Rainwater Harvesting (RWH): Designed to capture and recharge 100% of the one-day rainfall runoff from both roof and non-roof areas.
- Robust Infrastructure: A 30 CUM recharge tank and 6 recharge pits (total capacity 28.76 CUM) actively replenish groundwater.
The result: The project achieves a WBS of 1.17, meaning it returns 117% of the water it consumes, making it water-positive.
3. Driving Efficiency at the Source
Technology and design further helped optimize demand.
- Water-Efficient Fixtures: Low-flow plumbing fixtures delivered a 43% reduction in potable water consumption from baseline, well above IGBC NetZero Water Certification's 30% target.
- Long-Term Savings: Residents benefit from reduced water bills, ensuring sustainability is smart economics too.
The Conserve Consultants Advantage: Our Integrated Approach on IGBC NetZero Water Certification
Our role was to weave these systems into a seamless, efficient, and resilient framework by focusing on:
- Future-Proofing: Resilience against water scarcity.
- Cost Efficiency: Reduced dependence on municipal water.
- Circularity: Ensuring 100% wastewater is treated and reused it.
