At Conserve Consultants, we understand that even small details can have a huge impact on energy efficiency in green building projects. During a recent LEED commissioning for a state-of-the-art Pharma Factory, our team uncovered an important opportunity for optimizing cooling tower performance that significantly reduced energy waste.
While commissioning, it was discovered that the cooling water flow through the cooling towers was exceeding design conditions flow was at an excessive 125% of the full load value. Surprisingly, there were no flowmeters installed across the chilled water and cooling water circuits to provide clear flow readings.
Challenge & Approach:
Pressure gauges were in place at key points like chiller inlets/outlets and pump suction/discharge points, but these had a least count of 1.0 kgf/cm², which wasn’t precise enough for accurate flow evaluation. This made it difficult for the project team to confirm condenser water flows accurately.
Through, a thorough root cause analysis and close collaboration with the project and operations teams, Conserve Consultants recommended installing pressure gauges with a finer least count of 0.1 kgf/cm² at all critical locations.
This minor yet crucial design intervention allowed for the indirect calculation of condenser water flows with much higher accuracy even in the absence of direct flowmeters.
Impact:
With accurate flow data, the team identified the over‑120% flow causing energy wastage. This insight led to adjustments that brought the system back within design flow parameters, resulting in substantial energy savings and enhanced operational efficiency.
