It was a pleasure moderating the panel discussions with experts in this field: Mr. Daniel Lipschits, Mr. Shantanu Roy, Ar. Vijay Krishna, and Mr. Durganand Balsavar.
The topic “How can we make BIPV a standard part of building construction?” threw up an enthusiastic debate along with a host of questions. Some key takeaways: –
BIPV is a construction material. Its design, aesthetics, functionality, and placement have to be holistically considered as a building material and not on its return on investment (ROI). Has anyone decided on Italian marble based on its ROI?
Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy has published the Draft Guidelines for BIPV in India on their website. It contains the design and technical specifications of BIPVs, installation guidelines, safety precautions, quality measures, and O&M procedures. A handy reckoner for all architects and designers. PM – Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana incentivises the use of BIPV for residential projects in India. (https://lnkd.in/gN284Bgg) This, along with the draft guidelines, lays down a clear case for the implementation of BIPV for residential projects.
The case for BIPVs has to be made in the early design stages. The collaboration between clients, architects, consultants, and manufacturers is a must. The feasibility of BIPV for a residential owner, along with government incentives, can be a true differentiator and game changer.
The whole built environment should be explored for BIPV and not just the building façade. With EVs becoming popular, BIPV integration on parking lots and podiums should be thought through.
