I had the pleasure to meet some leading sustainability practitioners and academicians from across India and listen to their viewpoints. The presentations were interesting and discussions thought provoking.
Some key points that came out through this roundtable
1. High Performance Buildings (which could be +20% higher performing than Platinum Rated Green Buildings) can be built without any cost increase if designed with an integrated optimized strategy.
2. One of the key reasons of failure of sustainability in the built environment is because design development timelines are unreasonable. Due to this the design developments gets renegaded to thumb rules and shortcuts.
3. Credible data is unavailable. Be in data on operational building performance, climate data, carbon emission, rain water data, etc. One is unable to connect all the dots in the absence of credible data.
4. Over the last 25 years, sustainability initiatives which have a clear and easy to understand performance metrics, have connected to businesses well and have succeeded. Some examples are: BEE Star Label for appliances, the PAT scheme, Green Building Certifications, LED market transformation through the Ujala scheme.
